Nostalgic storyteller and popstar Harriet selects us 10 meaningful tracks that have inspired her effervescent sound.

‘I Saw the Light’ by Todd Rundgren

I only discovered this song a few years ago. I love the nostalgic production. The classic piano sound, slide guitar and all those layered backing vocals, so great.

‘All By Myself’ by Eric Carmen

Most people know Celine Dion’s version of this song, but the original is so dark and dramatic. I’ve covered this on my new album. We wanted to honour the intensity of the original.

‘What a Fool Believes’ by The Doobie Brothers

Michael McDonald’s voice is so iconic. No one sounds like him. This song is just such a classic and takes you right back to the ‘70s, or how I imagine it would have been!

‘Take It Easy’ by Eagles

Jackson Browne wrote this song with Glenn Frey. They were living together I think! So cool. I love the story of the song, the lyrics are so visual, like a little movie.

‘Yesterday Once More’ by Carpenters

Impossible to choose one of their songs as there are so many I love. But this one captures everything I’m feeling right now. Wanting to go back to a simpler time in life, in music. Fun fact, this was written by John Bettis who also wrote ‘Human Nature’ for Michael Jackson!

‘The Chosen One’ by Bread

I’m such a huge Bread fan. David Gates’ songwriting is vulnerable and beautiful. I love all the different sections of this song and how it moves from one to the next.

‘After the Love Has Gone’ by Earth, Wind & Fire

Such a vibe. This must have been the slow dance in every club in 1979.

‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA

Dancing Queen is a masterpiece, like most of ABBA’s records. Every note and sound is considered. So many singable hooks crammed into just a few minutes.

‘I Feel the Earth Move’ by Carole King

From Tapestry; one of the greatest albums of all time. There is so much soul in her voice and the music. She has been so influential and inspiring to me and so many other female artists.

‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ by John Denver

I love John Denver’s lyrics; his love of nature really comes through. This song sounds like fresh air to me. So warm and atmospheric.
