With sweeping electronica and lyrical intimacy, midnights introduce their world through 'Afterthoughts', a track born from restless nights and quiet revelations.

Nathan Ehrenfeld and Mat Baker, the longtime collaborators behind new duo midnights, have unveiled ‘Afterthoughts’, their debut single and the first taste of the forthcoming album Everything Will Be Alright, due later this year.

Formed after years of creative tension, breakups, and reconciliations, midnights emerged as a space for the pair to embrace their differences and channel them into something expansive. The late-night hours gave the project its name and much of its atmosphere, shaping songs that balance intimacy with cinematic scope. With NYC producer Jason Cummings refining their sound, Everything Will Be Alright brings together the raw songwriting roots of their former band Agnes Gooch with new textures and layered electronic landscapes.

‘Afterthoughts’ captures the restless energy of those nocturnal beginnings. Conceived on one of Nathan’s late-night returns from New York’s East Village to Los Angeles, the track began as a dreamlike soundscape of colour, grit, and movement. Baker’s melodies and lyrics transformed it into a cautionary tale about resisting the spirals that can follow moments of intensity.

Musically, it recalls the widescreen electronica of M83 and the atmospheric pull of Radiohead while carving out midnights’ own immersive identity. Lush strings, hypnotic drones, and dense textures conjure the sensation of wandering neon-lit streets after dark. While the cinematic aspects whisk up feelings of quiet introspection. “’Afterthoughts’ is a nighttime trip through a lit city street: saturated and colourful. A sonic warm bath with a story that cautions on not getting caught up in how the afterthoughts of intense moments can spin you out of control,” the duo explain.

As a first glimpse into midnights’ world, ‘Afterthoughts’ distills their late-night inspirations into moments of stillness, beauty, and connection. It sets the tone for Everything Will Be Alright, an album that promises to ground itself in honesty while reaching for something transcendent.
