For Amazon Music Breakthrough UK: 2025 Artists To Watch list, in collaboration with NOTION, we chatted to Sammy Virji to get the low down on his Coachella ambitions, listening to Rinse FM mixtapes and where he wants to take his music next.
If you found yourself at any raves over the summer, the chances are Sammy Virji was soundtracking your moments of dancefloor euphoria. With infectious tracks like ‘Find My Way Home’, ‘If U Need It’, and this summer’s ‘Damager’, Sammy is an architect of these visceral emotions you feel in the club. His signature style covers the full gamut of signature British sounds: bassline, UKG, and heavy breaks. This catapulted him into the limelight, with ‘Shella Verse’ standing out as a masterpiece, fusing Flowdan’s Caribbean inflexions and a two-stepping beat.
But Sammy is more than just a DJ; he’s a producer committed to redefining soundscapes and igniting the dancefloor. His innate ability to read the crowd and craft unforgettable sets has cultivated a devoted fanbase, allured by the electric atmosphere he creates.
With his contagious energy and a smile that lights up any room, Sammy channels the unifying essence of music, setting the stage for a thrilling new chapter in the dance scene. Here, he talks to us about his Coachella ambitions, listening to Rinse FM mixtapes and where he wants to take his music next.
Do you remember the moment you fell in love with music?
I actually can’t think of any one particular moment. Having been surrounded by it from a young age, I can’t remember not being obsessed with music.
Tell us a bit about your new track with kwn, how did the collaboration come about?
We met up in Hackney where we started the idea and found the vocal sample. But it wasn’t until a few months had passed that we revisited and completely changed it. One of the only elements to remain from the original collab was that vocal sample.
What do you hope people take away from it?
‘Damager’ was designed to hit in a club setting, so I would hope people feel that when they listen to it.
What are you manifesting for 2025?
Some more collaborations.
Who are your ones to watch?
Isgwan, ESC, and Meroman
What is your dream venue to play this year?
My dream venue to play this year would actually be a festival – Coachella.
What’s the proudest moment of your career so far?
I played at The Shrine in LA recently, which felt very surreal because my friends and family flew out to watch me play. It was very wholesome!
What do you hope people take away from your music?
I hope that it can bring people some joy. If my music has made at least one person happy, then I’ve won.
What’s your most unexpected musical inspiration?
Quincy Jones
If you could channel the energy of anyone in 2025 whose would it be?
Ronaldinho
What song or album changed your perspective on making music?
It’s a compilation, but Rinse 06 mixed by Plastician, was my first introduction to electronic music.
What’s next for you?
I’d love to release a big body of work at some point, hopefully soon…
