Here, we delve into the world of Andrew Cushin, talking all things Love Is For Everyone, plans of touring in the UK, and what’s next for him.
Congratulations on the new single, ‘Alright!’, it has real anthemic energy. Tell us about how this one came about.
‘Alright!’ is a song that came about very quickly. It’s about the struggles of being a bit skint but still wanting to enjoy yourself with mates. I wanted to make something really upbeat with a catchy chorus. I’m very proud of how it came out.
What were your inspirations behind the track?
I didn’t go into writing it with any inspiration. It kind of wrote itself. The topic is something everyone’s experienced, so there was no outside inspiration I was thinking of. It was a case of writing what you know I suppose.
Your upcoming album Love Is For Everyone is out in May, how does it build on the foundation of Waiting For The Rain?
It’s amazing. I never thought I’d release a first album, let alone a second! It’s a real credit to my team, label and everyone around us for the continued support and belief in me and this project. The second album sounds superb, and it’s exactly what I wanted.
You’ve worked with Gareth Nuttall on this record — what did he bring to the production that felt different from your debut?
Gaz was great. Going into the second record, I wanted a more hands-on approach. I said to Gareth from day one I wanted to create a record that I’d listen to and we definitely did that. Gaz is a great guitar player and plays on virtually every record. I’m proud of what we’ve created and I know Gaz is too. Hopefully, it won’t be the last time we work on a project together.
If Love Is For Everyone had one key message or feeling you want listeners to take away, what would it be?
I suppose it is… love? Again, after the first record, I was singing about real personal experiences, and although there are a few moments of that in one or two tracks, the overall message of Love Is For Everyone is love. I think everyone falls in love, and everyone falls out of it. I just wanted to write something universal and something that appeals to everyone.
What did you learn about yourself while making the album?
Nothing of any note. I’ve got a different attitude today than I had two or three years ago – it’s more in my own world rather than worrying about what someone else is doing, so every time I start a new project, every time I write a new song, I almost take an ‘I don’t care if it’s good or bad’ approach. I’m just doing it for me. In my opinion, Love is For Everyone is an amazing album but I think what makes it really amazing is that me and Gaz weren’t worried about doing something people would’ve hated. I did that record for me, the way I wanted it to sound. I can definitely live with that.
You’ve got a massive UK tour coming up—what can fans expect from your live shows this time around?
We’re taking extra care to plan the set, obviously songs from the new record as well as the bigger numbers from Waiting For The Rain. There’s also a chance to rock up a few of my earlier singles as well. The live shows will be great and are something I’m massively looking forward to.
You’re also set to play Come Together festival with Robbie Williams and Kaiser Chiefs—what does playing a huge hometown gig like that mean to you?
Newcastle is always a different show for me. I’ve said it before but if it wasn’t for my hometown and the support everyone’s given me, I wouldn’t be able to do this! Sharing the stage with Robbie Williams is obviously a great achievement, but for me, the biggest reward is getting back out in front of a Newcastle crowd!
What are your New Year’s resolutions?
It was to stop smoking but that crashed and burned early.
What’s next for Andrew Cushin?
I just want to keep writing, keep promoting the record, get ready for the live shows, and keep building the story.
