After an electrifying performance at Camden's KOKO supporting the newly reformed Rizzle Kicks, we caught up with rising star Rio Rainz.
Last weekend, Rio Rainz took to London’s iconic KOKO stage supporting Rizzle Kicks for their comeback show. “There’s something special about the energy of a shared experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else,” he tells us. Underneath the glow of the venue’s signature glitter ball, the rapper showcased his musical talents. He effortlessly performed his viral indie-rap tunes and some of his new material, like the single ’17’, which came out earlier this month.
Supporting an act as integral to 2010s UK culture as Rizzle Kicks is no easy feat, but Rio took the responsibility into his stride. As he continues his rise to stradom, we sat down with the multifaceted artist to get the inside scoop on his performance at KOKO, what he’s up to now, and what’s next for him.
Hey Rio Rainz, how’s 2024 going for you so far?
Hey NOTION! My year has been quite the rollercoaster ride. It started of slow and a bit static, but as time has passed, things have really picked up. Now, as the year draws to a close, I’m seeing some real progress and personal growth.
What’s your favourite thing about performing live?
My favourite part of performing live is the chance to connect with new fans in a way that feels raw and genuine. There’s something special about the energy of a shared experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else. It’s about leaving lasting impressions that go beyond the music.
What’s on your rider? If you don’t have one, what would be your dream rider?
On my rider, I have green tea, honey, Hennessy, and Tangfastics are just non-negotiables!
How does it feel to be supporting Rizzle Kicks at a venue as iconic as KOKO?
It felt incredible. I’ve never performed in a venue like KOKO before, so I was equally excited and nervous. There’s also a bit of nostalgia, especially since I used to listen to Rizzle Kicks when I was a kid. It’s crazy to think I’m now on the same stage.
Do you have any pre-show rituals or superstitions?
What’s one gig you’ve witnessed as a fan that you’ll never forget?
I haven’t been to that many live shows sadly, some of my favourite acts I’m yet to see!
What’s next for Rio Rainz?
I’m really excited to share some new music that’s deeply personal to me, I’ve poured so much into it, and I honestly can’t wait for everyone to hear it. Beyond the music, I’m looking forward to playing more shows, meeting new faces, and creating those special, shared moments with people who truly connect with what I’m doing. I feel incredibly grateful to have the chance to keep doing what I love, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
