Bonneville’s 'Flying Machine' soars with soulful grooves, retro-futurist funk, and a poignant search for wonder beyond adulthood.
With ‘Flying Machine’, retro-soul duo Bonneville crafts a mission statement inspired by dreamy declarations of escape and possibility. Released via Starita Records, the single marks a bold evolution for the Southern-rooted outfit, fusing analogue soul with sleek electronic textures to deliver a sound that feels both nostalgic and next-gen.
Written in a moment of quiet awe, guitarist and co-producer Jeff Hayashi found inspiration watching his son stare up at the moon, rekindling a childhood sense of limitless imagination. That spark birthed ‘Flying Machine’, a post-disco groove built on shimmering synths, slinky basslines, and lush live instrumentation. “It’s about the imagination we lose along the way,” Jeff says. “And maybe – just maybe – how we find it again.”
Lead vocalist Wes McGee gives the track its emotional altitude, gliding from airy falsettos to aching declarations of defiance and hope. “It’s about dreaming bigger than what the world tells you is possible,” McGee explains. His voice becomes the vessel – raw, yearning, determined – inviting listeners to reconnect with their inner dreamers.
With ‘Flying Machine’, Bonneville revisits soul music’s golden age, repurposing it for liftoff. It’s retro. It’s future-facing. And it’s a reminder that flying starts with remembering how to dream.
