Rising artist Ellie Parris on her life mantra, getting hyped to Rema, favourite playlists and much more.
Welcome to Fresh Face, a quick-fire interview series spotlighting the best rising talents in today’s youthful music scene. From biggest pet peeves to party tricks and death row meals, we’re stripping things back from the formal Q&A format. Think of it like speed dating, but with some of the freshest music makers worth discovering.
Born in Cardiff and now residing in London, up-and-coming artist Ellie Parris may only have two singles under her belt, but is surely heading for the stars. Some of her key inspirations are noted as the R&B and Soul legends Sade, Erykah Badu, Aaliyah, and Brandy.
Her shimmering new 00s-inflected R&B single, “Always” “‘represents the push and pull cycle within love. The miscommunication mixed with unrealistic expectations,” Ellie explains. It’s her second collaboration with Croydon rapper and producer Jords, the ‘Prince of Croydon’, after he produced her debut single “Seasons”.
We caught up with Ellie to ask her some burning questions. Dive in!
The biggest misconception about being a musician?
That it’s all glam. There are so many more layers to it. The hustle ain’t no joke.
If you were transported back to 2019, what’s the first thing you’d do?
I would say yes to more things. 2019 in hindsight was good to me. I just missed a lot of it because I was in my head
What are you currently obsessed with?
My own food. I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen & I have to say these are some of the best meals I’ve ever tasted. If I do say so myself.
Three things that inspire you outside of music?
Nature, Love & Women.
What’s your life mantra?
Protect your peace.
What song always gets you hyped when you hear it in the club?
Rema – Soundgasm. I don’t know what kind of crack they put in this?
Do you believe in aliens?
I’d like to think there is something out there…
Which playlist have you got on repeat? Which songs are on it and what kind of vibe is it?
Spotify’s Chilled R&B, one of my favourites for sure. Acoustic guitar to funky bass to a sax, with sultry voices. The best vibe.
Which celebrity would you love to be BFFs with?
Jhené Aiko. I’ve been listening to her for a long time, I feel like her music has been present throughout a huge part of my journey.
Do you have a party trick?
I don’t. I’m going to find one in the new year… it’s kind of lame that I don’t have one really.
