With 'I Know About Me', Kel Adore trades polish for power in a bold, unfiltered self-reckoning.

With her new single ‘I Know About Me’,  indie-pop artist Kel Adore steps fully into her own narrative – honoring the past, reflecting on growth, and unapologetically claiming her identity. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter has long been known for vivid storytelling and emotionally rich lyricism, but this latest track feels like a turning point: intimate, confident, and deeply rooted in self-awareness.

The song was sparked by a moment of quiet reflection. After inheriting a wooden hutch from her great-aunt, Kel filled it with family photos and began contemplating how much of herself, her eyes, her temperament, and her story could be traced through generations. “Their stories are my stories,” she says. “I can see ways in which my current story is an echo of theirs.”

While Kel’s previous releases like ‘Still a Child’ and ‘Late Bloomer’ leaned into polished alt-pop sounds, ‘I Know About Me’ embraces a rawer, more indie-leaning direction. There’s a subtle country twang that nods to her childhood love of Shania Twain, but the core of the track remains unmistakably her by being honest, heartfelt, and sonically unique. “I wanted it to feel unfiltered, like a conversation with yourself you didn’t plan to have,” she says.

Co-written in Beachwood Canyon with Anjali Sebastian and producer Danny Dash, the track came together as a meditation on identity, self-perception, and the complicated dynamics that shape who we become. The original working title, ‘Own Devices’, didn’t survive the final cut, but the phrase became a creative doorway into themes of generational memory, independence, and emotional reckoning.

Kel opens the song with a striking line: “Under the bed you could be who you wanted.” It’s a lyric that captures the quiet, sometimes desperate moments of self-exploration that happen behind closed doors when no one’s watching, and the pressure to perform fades. “I love the challenge of telling a big story through a small moment,” she explains.

The recording process was as emotional as the writing. “In the booth, I cycled through submission, defiance, desperation, and acceptance,” she says. “I wanted the performance to carry the tension between vulnerability and power.”

That emotional honesty is the heartbeat of the song and of Kel’s broader creative vision. “I used to feel like I had something to prove,” she admits. “But this song helped me realize I don’t. It’s really just about radical acceptance of ourselves and of others.”

The themes of self-worth, confidence, and mental clarity aren’t new for Kel, but ‘I Know About Me’ frames them with a bolder lens. It’s about more than personal growth, it’s about breaking generational patterns, releasing old expectations, and reclaiming your narrative.

“I’m no longer creating to please anyone else,” she says. “This is the first time I feel like I’m really speaking for myself.”

That sense of ownership comes through in one of the track’s standout lyrics: “I know about me, A.D.O.R.E.” It’s the first time she’s name-dropped herself in a song and it feels like a well-earned moment of self-celebration.

A music video, co-directed with Liv McCrary and shot in Laguna Beach, further brings the song’s message to life. Centered on sisterhood, reconciliation, and growing into your own identity, the visual is personal for Kel, who is the youngest of five siblings. “It’s about growing up together, drifting apart, and finding your way back to each other,” she says. “It’s definitely the most meaningful video I’ve made.”

‘I Know About Me’ is the second single from her upcoming EP Wildflower, a project that embraces self-discovery and growth without apology. And for the first time in her career, Kel says she’s not just making music she’s building a world also. “I used to treat each song like its own little island,” she says. “Now I’m connecting them. It’s all part of the same universe.”

Beyond the studio, Kel is taking the reins of her artistic vision in every sense. Directing her own videos, editing visuals, and shaping every layer of her brand. On the set of her latest video, she had a moment of realization. “I looked around and thought, ‘Wow, I’m really doing this.’ That’s a feeling I’ll never forget.”

Despite the growing attention, it’s the messages from fans that stick with her most, especially the ones that say her music makes them feel less alone. “That’s why I do this,” she says. “If someone listens and feels seen, that’s everything.”

When she’s not in the studio, Kel finds joy in the unexpected – like recently dressing up as George Washington for a wig party. “I’ve never made more friends in one night,” she laughs. “Being goofy with people you love is healing in a whole different way.”

As for what’s next, Kel hints at more singles and visuals leading up to the EP, but remains focused on staying grounded in her truth. “I’ve learned that not everyone is going to get you and that’s okay,” she says. “What matters most is that you get you.” And with ‘I Know About Me’, Kel Adore proves she absolutely does.
