‘ART’ by Tyla
Dropping her highly anticipated debut album today is the Grammy-award winning rising star Tyla, who catapulted into fame with her platinum hit single ‘Water’. With her sonic identity rooted in amapiano, the South African singer explains “I just see our sound going so far: the culture, the words, the slang. Even just Joburg — the thought of people now singing about Joburg”. Our favourite has got to be ‘ART’ with its atmospheric rhythm, playful yet thoughtful lyrics and NABIL-directed music video to boot.
‘obsessed’ by Olivia Rodrigo
Spilling the long-awaited deluxe version of GUTS today, Olivia Rodrigo has finally dropped the vinyl variant’s hidden songs, including the internet’s much craved ‘obsessed’. A pop punk-inspired catchy masterpiece, Olivia blends heavy bass, punchy drums with her lilting vocals and ever-clever lyrics co-written with producer Daniel Nigro and Annie Clark AKA St Vincent.
‘Type Shit’ by Future, Metro Boomin
Kendrick Lamar’s not-so-subtle diss on Drake and J. Cole will catch the headlines on Future and Metro Boomin’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU, but there’s a lot to be loved about tracks like ‘Type Shit’. The Atlanta trap kingpins revel in a gothic allure, using church bells and searing synths to beef out the rapper’s devilish cadence.
‘Cinderella’ by Remi Wolf
Teasing us with the first offering off of her upcoming album, Remi Wolf’s ‘Cinderella’ blends an exciting variety of influences, crossing genres in true Remi fashion. Teaming up with Mac De Marco for an equally playful music video, she explains that this song “was me stepping in as my own fairy godmother telling myself that I was in control…I wanted to make something where you can’t help but dance and move and feel good while listening”.
‘Good Look’ by Lay Bankz
Next up in Philadelphia’s rap-sphere is undoubtedly Lay Bankz, who at the age of 19, is already having a visceral impact on American music. ‘Good Luck’ is another gut-punching trap banger filled with tongue in cheek wordplay. “How you ugly with no money? You just basic,” she questions with all the sass of someone at the top of their game.
'Jealous Type’ by GRAACE
Returning from a two year break, Sydney’s favourite singer & songwriter GRAACE is back with a tongue-in-cheek and utterly relatable single ‘Jealous Type’, the first of a must-listen new body of work. “It feels so much more powerful and in tune with myself than a lot of stuff that I've released before” she explains, grateful for the self-discovery honesty her single and upcoming project has allowed her to explore.
‘Races’ by Interplanetary Criminal, Blanco
Manchester NUKG prodigy Interplanetary Criminal and Kennington rapper Blanco bet each way on their fiery new single, ‘Races’. A steam-rolling two-stepper that references all the vices that come with going to the ponies, the track comes quick out the gates, smacking you around the face with hefty breaks. Hats off if you ever saw this collaboration coming.
‘You Need Me Now?’ by girl in red & Sabrina Carpenter
As she gears up to the release of her new album I’m Doing It Again Baby!, girl in red has teamed up with pop princess Sabrina Carpenter for break up anthem ‘You Need Me Now?’. Blending her signature indie pop vibe with a defiant upbeat edge, it’s an exciting tease for what’s yet to come.
‘London Lido’ by Kojaque
Taken from the deluxe edition of Kojaque’s debut album, PHANTOM OF THE AFTERS, ‘London Lido’ is an ear-splitting trap jam filled with the whit we’ve come to expect from the artist. “I’m on some war-torn shit,” he raps with a chip on his shoulder, demanding reparations for the damage British rule did for Ireland all those years ago.
‘Talk To Me’ by Two Shell, FKA Twigs
Enigmatic electronic producer-DJ renegades Two Shell returned this week in regal company. ‘Talk To Me’, featuring the ethereal FKA Twigs, is a pumping hyperpop and euro dance mash up that flexes the singer’s angelic falsettos over typically warped and ever morphing production.
