Electronic producer TroyBoi returns with ROOTZ, a five-track EP that fuses trap and bass with Indian and Punjabi traditions, drawing on his heritage and collaborations with stars like Jazzy B, Amrit Maan and BombayMami.
Electronic music innovator TroyBoi just released his most personal project yet, ROOTZ, via Ultra Records. The five-track EP blends his trademark trap and bass-driven sound with the vibrant traditions of Indian, Punjabi, house, and hip-hop music, serving as a deep dive into his cultural heritage.
With Indian, Chinese, Portuguese, and Nigerian descent, TroyBoi has long drawn inspiration from across the globe. But with ROOTZ, he shines a spotlight on his Indian roots, a connection inspired by his mother’s love of Bollywood. The EP features collaborations with an array of international talent, including Punjabi-Canadian artist Amrit Maan on ‘Masala’, veteran Punjabi singer Jazzy B on ‘Okay’, and Indo-Swiss artist BombayMami on ‘Beggin’. Also included are the solo track ‘Kamli’ and ‘Kabhi’, which samples the late Lata Mangeshkar’s iconic vocals from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
“Doing an Indian-inspired EP has been a dream of mine,” TroyBoi explains. “This project is a tribute to my upbringing and the music that shaped me.”
A standout is ‘Okay’, where Jazzy B’s powerful vocals meet TroyBoi’s bass-heavy production, fusing bhangra’s infectious energy with modern trap. For TroyBoi, collaborating with Jazzy B was a natural choice: “When I made the beat, I already heard him on it—we sent it right away, and he nailed it.”
With ROOTZ, TroyBoi not only celebrates his heritage but also encourages the next generation of South Asian artists to embrace authenticity. “Stay true to your roots,” he says.
