Visionary producer and composer Emma-Jean Thackray takes us on a journey through the bizarre and wonderful, handpicking 10 tracks that explore the sonically strange and joyfully unhinged.
'RINGS' by Otis McDonald
This guy plays everything on his tracks, all of the instruments. Like, he’s just sat in the studio on his own doing everything, who does that? So weird...
'sweet life' by Solomon Fox
Same with this guy. I love the subtle way he’s introducing jazz harmony and the irreverent approach. The silliness is joyful.
'ANNIE, I SING FOR…' by Saya Gray
The production on her music is so weird and wonderful. You’re taken through a bunch of different worlds and rather than it being difficult to get lost in it, it’s strangely transportive. It feels very modern.
'Hypnotized' by River Tiber
I know this guy and although he appears very normal, it’s all a lie because I know he’s in his basement 24/7 surrounded by guitars and drums and cellos and nice mics. Secret weirdo.
'Aht Uh Mi Head' by Shuggie Otis
Shuggie is a dream. This whole record changed so many artists’ lives. Layering dub ideas with a bouncy yet soft drum machine, a sweetly sung melody, and gorgeous string arrangements. You gotta be weird to have that imagination.
'NEW MAGIC WAND' by Tyler, The Creator
I don’t need to say anything to prove to you that Tyler is weird. Love him.
'Binz' by Solange
Solange’s high art approach to everything is so bold. Performances in the Guggenheim, sculptural outfits, she’s magical. This tune is pretty weird because it’s a really reverberant drum beat, with a very bare bassline. It leaves the vocals hanging in mid air in front of you. Very effective. Kinda weird.
'A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II)' by Thundercat
This mf the weirdest guy I know. I know what he did to his GRAMMYs trophy. Listen to him meow. He has matching outfits with his cats, for real. Dreamboat.
'Bars. 16' by Steve Lacy
Steve plays it all and records his ideas on his phone. He shows that all you need is imagination and to be yourself. Powerful. Gorgeous.
'Human Behaviour' by Björk
Björk is the leader of the weirdos. I think the monarchy should be abolished but also I would kneel for Björk if she asked me to. I’d do pretty much anything if she asked me to. Once we were getting some shopping at the same time (not together) and the girl at the checkout screamed.
