As the year winds to a close, singer and rapper Mallrat rounds up her favourite rare songs into a 10Trax playlist.
‘ATM Jam’ by Azealia Banks & Pharrell Williams (KAYTRANADA Remix)
The perfect song and video. Extremely mermaid core and sums up almost everything good about 2013. Featuring Alexa Demi six years before Euphoria fame, the mansion from Doja’s ‘Say So’ video, AB in a Sailor Moon type fit and sequinned DI$COUNT UNIVERSE outfits.
‘La La La’ by Lil Wayne
One of my favourite Lil Wayne tracks. A Carter 3 B side/leak circa 2008.
‘Joni (Perfect Timing)’ by SZA
This guitar sounds like it’s from ‘Angeles’ by Elliott Smith, maybe it never had an offical release because of difficulties clearing the sample. She dropped it on Instagram but that’s it. A perfect, beautiful song that I wish made it onto her SOS album.
‘Strawberry Swing’ by Frank Ocean
From Frank’s Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape in 2011. It samples Coldplay’s ‘Strawberry Swing’ and plays off the original melody and lyrics. I also love the Celtic influences on the instrumentation. This song gives me goosebumps and makes me miss my little sister.
‘Nothing is Promised’ by Rihanna & Young Thug (SOPHIE Remix)
Rest in peace, SOPHIE. Young Thug rapping on a SOPHIE beat is a match made in heaven, I am so happy that this exists.
‘National Anthem demo’ by Lana Del Rey
There are so many magic Lana demos floating around the internet, this is one of my favourites. The tougher, bass-boosted version of ‘National Anthem’.
‘Hero’ by Frank Ocean, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon & Diplo
I loved this Converse series. They would put different artists together in the Converse studio, and then make the song available for free download on Tumblr. This is one of my favourites, and features the West LA Children’s Choir.
‘Break Yourself’ by Gucci Mane & Lil B (Diplo Remix)
Gucci Mane + Lil B + 9PM by ATM Sample = <3333333
‘LAMB’ by BROCKHAMPTON
To be honest, BROCKHAMPTON have never been my cup of tea. But this song is gorgeous.
‘Come A Long Way’ by Michelle Shocked
Ok, this one is really rare. When I was a kid, there was a CD with this song on it floating around. In retrospect it made a big impression on my songwriting taste. The only trace that I can find of this song online is this Soundcloud link with two likes - I’m one of them. The lyrics describe taking your motorbike for one last ride around LA before it’s reposessed. Reminds me of Bob Dylan x Fiona Apple.
