Berlin-based, UK-raised electronic artist Perera Elsewhere selects us 10Trax that make them, ‘Just Wanna Live Some’.
'Fuck Le System' by Perera Elsewhere
This is my latest double single, from my forthcoming album Just Wanna Live Some out October 24th. So the theme of my 10Trax is the tunes that ‘Make me wanna live some’ and these two tracks epitomise that. The new album addresses the idea of self-determination through creativity and action in itself. Not wanting to even give a fuck about many things because there is so much to give a fuck about, is a reaction many have. Sometimes you feel like simplifying things and living each day at a time. Fun fact, the algoriddim introduced me to Andy, and I played her tune on my Boiler Room set, which gained a lot of traction, so Andy hit me up on TikTok. I sent her a beat to record on, she won a residency in Berlin that I had advised her to apply for, and we recorded a second tune. I have visited the Ivory Coast three times. First time to teach Ableton for the Goethe Institut, I made friends and returned to play a couple of times. I hadn’t come across Andy S while I was there, but listening to Ivorian music made the algoriddim lead me to her!
'Delta Rain Dream' by Jon Hassell & Brian Eno
I had never heard of this album until somebody told me I drench my trumpet in effects in a Jon Hassell-esque way. I love this album, it feels like a ship coming home. Also, I gotta say that ignorance is bliss... maybe if I had heard of Jon Hassell I would never have pitch shifted on my trumpet recordings. I might have felt like I was copying him.
'Journey In Satchidananda' by Alice Coltrane
Afro-Indian spiritual jazz... discovered this music in Berlin of all places, which is. a place people usually discover industrial techno. It shows that any place can lead you anywhere... It's all about the company you surround yourself with. Alice Coltrane also spoke to me because I spent the first 10 years of my life going to the Hindu temple, surrounding myself with devotional Carnatic music. At that time, I had no idea about spiritual jazz; I had no idea that African Americans had been into that stuff.
's _t_ l' by mau from nowhere & Maya Amolo
The algoriddim led me to Mau back in April. Mau is from Nairobi but has spent time in London. It was a weird coincidence that a few days after I went down a Mau wormhole, the Nairobi label Ginene Records asked me to collaborate with an artist from Nairobi; I immediately said that I wanted to collab with Mau. In June, we started to collaborate remotely, so hopefully something is in the pipeline. Life is filled with chance and coincidence; even though we think we are at the driving wheel, there are so many forces we have no control over. I like that, the unpredictability of life makes me wanna live some.
'Deep End' by Benji Flow and Ragz Originale
Just the perfect track. Perfect flow and production! It makes me feel so warm. It’s soulful, eclectic and makes me feel homesick, even! Yeah, I miss London. But I’m so lucky it's inside me. I’m a massive fan of Ragz Originale’s ‘Iced Out Summer’ with BenjiFlow and Oscar #Worldpeace; its been my summer anthem for two years.
‘Stay Sane’ by Pink Siifu
My idea of ‘Just wanna live some’ has a lot to do with simply choosing to stay sane in this rollercoaster shit show of a world. I mean, with all the emotions we are navigating on a daily basis, this anthem carries. I’ve got a lot of love for Siifu, Gonja Sufi, Wu-Tang, Dilla... etc.
'Faceshopping' by SOPHIE
I mean, just too good! I used to rinse this track towards the end of a set to wake people up. RIP Sophie, what a legend.
‘I’m Not Dancing’ by Tirzah
This whole crew, Mica Levi, Speakers Corner Quartet , Coby Sey… I have endless love for this lot. Mica Levi's production aesthetics have always sounded so on point and original to me. What a prolific artist. Low key, I’m fan girling! This is the first Tirzah release; I baught it when it came out and DJed it in my earliest DJ sets.
'Pimp' by Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band
Who doesn’t love a steel drum cover of Snoop x 50 Cent? The irony is that this cover originates in Hamburg. Germans do it better! It speaks to me as I made a really wonky emo cover of 50 Cent's ‘Candy Shop’, titled ‘Karam’, on my second solo album. I had the luck of living in Singapore for two years as a kid and going to a really cool school where my big sister got the chance to play in a steel band. I was so pissed when we moved back to the UK and I got to play nothing fun like that.,
'The Homeless Wanderer' by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru
I have a lot of love for Ethiopian music; there’s some mad tonality and scales in their music. I love the fact that her music was discovered/archived towards the end of her life. The title of this track is also so elsewhere. It somehow reminds me of Moondog… another character. Big up the quiet ones whose voices we hear later. Sometimes I ask myself if any of the artists I know will become musically more commercial after their death, which is an odd question, but valid, I think.
