Irish R&B artist Matt Ó presents charismatic new bop, "Sonny", a buttery ode to 'getting that money'.
Having made a name for himself as one half of an alternative hip-hop duo, Irish artist Matt Ó has gone solo. His infectious new single “Sonny” showcases what Matt does best, full of catchy hooks, smooth bars and laid-back beats.
As one half of Tebi Rex, Matt Ó released studio albums, toured across the UK and Europe, and played at festivals like SXSW and The Great Escape. Now making music on his own, discussing his decision to write solo material, the artist describes: “you should write about what you know – not what you think others are interested in. That’s where you get something special, where you find the best art. That’s what this tape is to me. It’s what I know.. myself.”
New cut “Sonny” leans towards the pop-oriented side of Matt’s repertoire, with lo-fi instrumentation and smooth bars that carry the effortless nature of Matt’s music-making. He describes the track as “like the phrase, ‘Get your money up, not your funny up’ – but in song”, setting these lyrics against an earworm guitar riff. His EP ‘Messer’ is out later this year, and we’ll certainly be looking out for it.
