Take a deep dive into Holy Basil's world in her latest release, 'The Outside', which intertwines sound and immersion seamlessly.
Emerging from the vibrant music scene of Gold Coast, Australia, Holy Basil is back with a captivating new single, ‘The Outside’. This track continues to showcase her signature style, which she’s dubbed ‘Theatronic’—a unique blend of electronica, cinematic soundscapes, and the dramatic flair of musical theatre.
‘The Outside’ isn’t just another release; it’s a deep dive into Holy Basil’s world, where sound and emotion intertwine seamlessly. Produced by Alex Kewley at Altitude Music Studio, the song combines the thrum of bass guitar, atmospheric synths, and Holy Basil’s haunting vocals to create a soundscape that’s as immersive as it is introspective.
Holy Basil first made waves in 2020 with a self-produced EP that she recorded in her bedroom, a humble beginning that belied her ambitious sound. By 2022, she was performing her sophomore EP live at HOTA, proving that she wasn’t just a studio artist but a performer with a strong stage presence. Her debut single, ‘Over The Edge,’ released earlier this year, took her on a journey across the USA, earning her a growing international following.
‘The Outside’ marks a return to more personal territory for Holy Basil. Inspired by her own struggles with mental health, the track is a reflection on feeling lost and overwhelmed—a yearning to return to a place of safety and simplicity. It’s a sentiment that’s likely to resonate with many listeners, offering a sense of connection in its raw vulnerability. With influences ranging from Björk and Kate Bush to Grimes and David Bowie, Holy Basil’s music is a melting pot of eclectic sounds and styles. ‘The Outside’ is no exception, blending the experimental with the emotive to create an innovative track that feels deeply human.
On the track, Holy Basil explains, “‘The Outside’ is an ode to the parts of us that often feel misplaced, helpless and alone in such an intense world. I wanted to recreate the feeling and anticipation of what it’s like to be inside the womb, about to birth and start a whole new crazy life that nobody can prepare you for.”
