Iconic British sportswear brand, Umbro, kicks off AW21 with debut collaboration with cult British designer Nigel Cabourn.
British sportswear brand Umbro was formed in 1924, initially trading from the back of a pub in Mobberley. Soon, from football to rugby, Umbro’s signature double diamond was everywhere. Today, to kick off their Autumn/ Winter collection, Umbro reveal its collaboration with iconic British designer Nigel Cabourn.
Nigel Cabourn is a designer who prides himself on not following fashion trends: “Everything I design,” Nigel explains, “comes from either a moment in history, an inspirational person or a vintage garment.” Nigel’s love for collecting military uniforms and vintage sportswear forms the backbone of this collaboration with Umbro.
The ten-piece collection honours Umbro’s rugby legacy and infuses it with Cabourn’s military influences. Comprised of rugby shirts with oversized ‘N’ and ‘C’ back patches, sweats, drill tops, RAF inspired badges and labels, and a remake of an original WW2 leather rugby ball – all in accents of mustard, navy and sky blue – the collection is a lesson in sportswear nostalgia.
In a note on Cabourn’s website, the designer exclaims: “Collaborating with Umbro was a sentimental trip for me as it was the first sports brand I wore in the 1950s as a school kid! My first choice was I wanted to be a professional goalkeeper and also Umbro sponsored the 1966 England Team World Cup Winners!! So the Umbro name meant quite a lot to me!!”
With prices ranging from £40 to £135, the collection is available to purchase online at the Umbro and Cabourn website from the 4th of November.
