‘worst behaviour’ by kwn
kwn is in a lane of her own. The singer-songwriter from Walthamstow makes music that feels way beyond London’s borders, picking up transatlantic R&B nuances and chopping them with powerful beats and a gospel-like resonance. On ‘worst behaviour’, she talks her talk with a sultry swagger and remains her alarmingly alluring self.
‘Wagashi’ by BXKS
‘Wagashi’ translates in Japanese to a “Japanese confectionary,” but on BXKS’ new single of the same name, the production is remarkably dark and sinister. El Londo and Kxmel’s beat sounds like a late-night rendezvous in Tokyo, the claps flickering like a broken light on an advertisement board. Lyrically, BXKS looks for a way home after a night out, aware of the streets around her but the aura she holds on them.
‘IF I CAN’T BE YOURS’ by bullet tooth
UKG’s most elusive, bullet tooth, released one of his biggest heaters last month in the form of ‘IF I CAN’T BE YOURS’. Featuring a killer remix package, that includes SICARIA and Enamour, the single comes off the back of a collaborative project with Capo Lee, connecting the dots between garage, rave and UK bass.
‘patty hearst’ by The Crying Nudes
“Who the hell are The Crying Nudes?”, is a question that’s been banded around the NOTION office regularly for over a year now. The enigmatic band are signed to Dean Blunt’s WORLD MUSIC and barely have a digital footprint. One thing’s for sure though, is that they make beautiful music and ‘patty hearst’ is no different with its pirhouetting instrumentation and lyrics that welcome the moments in life we take for granted.
‘Camera Shy’ by Ghais Guevara
Ask anyone who’s into their underground rap and Ghais Guevara’s name will be mentioned. The Philadelphia wordsmith’s new single, ‘Camera Shy’, starts soulfully before exploding with rolling drums and his snarling vocals. The single comes with news of his debut album, Goyard Ibn Said, set for release next year.
‘Drunk’ by Fabiana Palladino
Fabiana Palladino's ‘Drunk’ showcases her confident evolution, blending jazz and pop influences into a sound that feels more raw and stripped back than her self-titled debut album. Recorded at Abbey Road, the record forbodes a US and Japan tour in the new year, bringing her blossoming pop voice to new realms.
‘Planet Popstar’ by WISHY
‘Planet Popstar’ blends dreamy shoegaze and catchy pop-punk, as WISHY capture the longing for unreachable dreams. The band are currently touring the UK and EU, playing Pitchfork London next week at The Windmill.
‘Holding You Back’ by Ken Samson & Nolais
From Nottingham, England, comes the alternative hip-hop artist Ken Samson. He has developed a following in the UK thanks to his distinctive approach and moving lyrics, which are on full display in his new single ‘Holding You Back’, featuring Nolais. Ken’s music combines traditional hip-hop themes with alternative sounds to produce a sound that is both recognisable and original.
‘History’ by Kiico
Kiico, a musician from north London, was inspired to start rapping at the age of five after finding a notebook of music written by his dad. The up-and-coming rapper had to grow up fast, using lyricism as a way to ‘lay bare realities and struggles’. On ‘History’, he reminds us where he comes from and his desire to change his life for the better.
‘wytm’ by Gdup, Kirbs
On paper, this collaboration makes so much sense. Gdup’s infectious trapwave hooks and Kirbs’ direct and visceral flows are what’s great about underground music at the moment, sitting on polar opposite ends of the spectrum but meeting in the middle with their unflinchingly honest portrayals of growing up in London. ‘wytm’ is such a jam, uniting their penchant for melodies and unfaultable rhyme schemes.
