Editorial: Jesse Jo Stark Will Be Your Tangerine

As an artist, Jesse Jo Stark has demonstrated her ability to cover a myriad of sounds, yet the throughline that connects them is her trademark echoing vocals and vintage melodies.

 

Of her first two releases in 2015, “Driftwood” is a dreamy country number that feels endlessly romantic. Comparatively, sister single “Down Your Drain” had a sexier pop-rock groove. Since then, Jesse Jo has danced between mesmerising country-esque ballads reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves and First Aid Kit to badass rock numbers. Shapeshifting between sounds has been a conscious decision for Jesse, as she’s said previously that she doesn’t like putting a genre on her music.

 

Jesse Jo’s latest song “Tangerine”, an enchanting, shoegazing song soaked in country sun. “I’ll be your tangerine/ You can peel me with your teeth/ And I’m so sweet,” she sings delicately in the chorus. Lyrically it’s about the transformation and complexities of a person; peeling back the layers of someone reveals their being. If that’s not enough to convince you, it was bigged up by the legendary Cher on Twitter – the ultimate seal of approval.

 

The first taste of Jesse Jo’s forthcoming album, “Tangerine” is the first single since her stunning rendition of the John Prine classic “Angel from Montgomery” in April. It’s one of several singles due for release in the coming months.

 

Besides her burgeoning music career, Jesse Jo’s spread her creative wings by designing collections for Chrome Hearts and more recently, appearing in Yungblud’s punk rager music video, “Strawberry Lipstick”. With so much on the horizon, we can’t wait to see where her sun will rise next.
