Abby Jasmine is the New York artist effortlessly blending R&B, pop and rap into one smooth juice. We find out about her musical firsts.

If you haven’t heard the smooth vocals and rap stylings of Abby Jasmine, now’s the time to get to know. Based in the Big Apple, Abby has been keeping busy since she released her debut project, ‘Trap Mom’ in October 2018. Building fame as a social media personality on Vine, Jasmine has since been building up her rap game by releasing three additional projects – the EPs ‘Abbnormal’, ‘I Hate You All’ and ‘Who Cares?’, which last year became an album, and then bore a deluxe version.

With so much creative energy, it may come as no surprise that Abby Jasmine never saw herself destined for a 9 to 5 job. Growing up with a multi-instrumentalist father and singing in her Staten Island church choir, it wasn’t long before Abby started playing making her own music.

Describing her sound as “moody pop or sassy R&B”, 22-year-old Abby Jasmine has world domination in her sights. We caught up with the burgeoning star to hear all about her musical firsts. Dive in!

First song you ever made?

The first song I ever made was in the 3rd grade for Black History Month project in school. Me, my mum and my dad wrote it together. It was a song about segregation and how it wasn’t cool lol. I actually got picked to perform it at a Black History Month festival too.

First song you released officially?

First song I released officially was a remix to Baka Not Nice’s “Live Up To My Name”. Baka actually hit me up after saying he fucked with it.

First CD you owned?

The Princess Diaries movie soundtrack. I think my mom had gotten it for me. I used to play it on my CD player all the time. “Supergirl” by Krystal Harris was ahead of its time.

First time you realised you wanted to be a musician?

I think maybe in the 4th or 5th grade. I tried to start a band with my classmates but none of us played instruments at the time.

First gig you went to?

A Lecrae concert. They were in there mosh pitting for Jesus. It was crazy.

First festival you went to and the first one you performed at?

First festival I’ve been to was Smokers Club Fest in 2018. Also the first time I performed at one. I was the first one up though so I got to perform and then enjoy all of the performances for the rest of the weekend.

First instrument you owned?

A harmonica. I wasn’t good at it though. Eventually, I picked up piano around the 5th grade.

First time you felt like giving up?

Every single time I hop on a treadmill.

First time you were starstruck?

When I met T-Pain for the first time. He casually walked by me while I was sitting in the studio and he said hey and all I remember was saying “my name is Abby”. To this day I cringe.

First time you heard your music playing somewhere?

I had a few songs on the radio but I never was able to catch them. The one time I caught it was in Texas for SXSW. I think I was getting ready in my Airbnb and I had Beats 1 radio playing. Ebro had started playing my song “Relax”. Everyone in the house was screaming and we took shots after. One of my favourite moments for sure.
