With an album, 'Vulnerability', out today, Pablo Nouvelle makes us an exclusive mix of songs that inspired the new record.
How did you choose the tracks to put this mix together?
Besides showcasing a lot of the new album I wanted the mix to reflect songs and artists that inspired me during the process of composing and producing the 14 tracks that ended up on the record. Sometimes I expose pretty clearly where the inspiration comes from sometimes it’s more subtle. Artists like Bonobo who have been with me for so long that it’s their sound aesthetics that shape me rather than concrete elements of a certain song.
Was there any external influence or inspirations?
I’m a reference guy. I love to get inspired by other music and try to create a soundscape that comes close to what resonated with me in the first place . It’s like cooking. a few ingredients from there and a few ingredients from here. So i never run out of ideas but to bake something unique with the same ingredients like everyone else uses, that’s the true art.
Where do you imagine people listening to the mix?
It’s definitely an upbeat mix which is driven by heavy beats. But if you take it out on a run or (to stay in the kitchen) you cook a five course menu for your loved one whilst pumping the mix on your speakers, that’s totally up to you. I guess by my standards the album (hence this mix) is quite hard but for someone else it might still seem very melodic, maybe melancholic but always playful.
