Robinson is New Zealand’s latest pop contender. Following in the footsteps of Lorde, the 22 year-old power pop sensation has been making a name for herself intenationally with her uplifting, chart-ready pop songs. Her latest is ‘Medicine’, a huge pop anthem that could easily soundtrack a Hollywood blockbuster one day soon. Off the back of the single, Robinson is joining our current cover star Hayley Kiyoko on her Europen tour this month, we caught up with the rising star for this week’s Internet Crush.

Do you remember your dreams? Tell us about a recent dream you’ve had…
I usually always remember my dreams. I used to try and sleep for longer just so I could be in my dreamland for longer. My last dream was super weird, or so I was told, I kept yelling “quick open facebook right now…!” I’m annoyed I couldn’t remember that one because it sounds hectic.

 

Have you ever committed a crime (or done something illegal)? If so what did you do and were there consequences?
No I’ve never committed a crime…. That I can think of 😉

 

What is the closest you’ve ever come to death?
Anytime I cross the road. I live in a fairy land, and thankfully all my friends have pulled me back from crossing when it’s dangerous! Look before you cross!!!

 

Describe your sound in three words…
Honest, emotional, relatable.

 

What’s your star sign? (and are you a typical *whatever your sign is*?)
Virgo! Virgos are known for being extreme perfectionists and I read also practical… I am a perfectionist when it comes to my music but by no means am I practical so I’m unsure if I match up!

 

When was the first time you had your heart broken?
Hmmm… I’ve forgotten that one.

 

Who was your first celebrity crush?
Leonardo Dicaprio!!! Oh my gosh, Titanic.

 

What would your biography be called?
She’s mad as a hatter!

 

What was the first song you ever wrote?
I was 10… please don’t judge hahaha! “Give me a chance to fly” haha!! The lyrics went “give me a chance to fly, give me a reason why… cos you say we’re all in this together…. But I don’t believe you this time… yeah yeah yeah” talk about a wordsmith!

 

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
“Be yourself! Mad, weird, be it all!” I don’t think I truly understood the weight of those words as they’re commonly used so we forget what it actually means. However, I think many people struggle with accepting themselves and embracing their quirks! I think quirks are what makes a person different! I love them! Weirdness is great.

How was high school?
High school was a time I learnt so much about myself, I was outwardly extremely happy and sometimes internally very sad. I loved music class, I think that’s what got me out of bed in the morning, and I absolutely loved coming to school to get up to all sorts with my friends. It was certainly an adventure ha!

 

What’s the biggest problem facing humans as a species?
Global Warming is huge. We need to look after our beautiful planet! And also social media! I’m completely addicted to my phone, just like the majority of the world. I sometimes envy people living in a time where everyone wasn’t glued to their phone and freaking out over how many likes they get on a photo.

 

Describe your own personal idea of hell…
Losing my singing voice, or not being able to do music.

 

What’s a lie you’ve told and what was the fallout?
When I was 6 or 7, my teacher told me to put the lid on the lolly jar while she got all the kids ready for going out to the field. As she was shutting the door, all parts of me were screaming “EAT ALL THE LOLLIES”… and I had a huge internal conflict until I was watched by the whole class from the window scoffing handfuls of lollies into my mouth. Embarrassing.

 

Which talent would you most like to have?
I’d love to be able to paint and draw really well! My sister is amazing, and it just looks so therapeutic!

 

What’s one thing we can all do to contribute to equality?
Knowing it’s an issue is a start. So many people live in ignorance that it’s even an issue. We can do so much just by having conversations with people about it.

 

When was the last time you cried and why?
Two days ago I believe. Self-doubt.

 

Where/What will you be doing at the end of the world?
Having the craziest dance party you’ve ever witnessed. It will be wild, and everyone is welcome. As long as you are down for non-stop dancing.
