Kyan takes a trip through the ancient canals of Mexico City in the hallucinogenic video for new single Like Summer.

British R&B is having another banner year. With every new crop of artists that’s emerged, the genre has gone from strength to strength, rivalling even the powerhouse of the US in recent years. Most of this talent has been focused in London, but the latest breakout from the British R&B scene is Cambridgeshire’s Kyan, who after a couple of years away has come floating back into the public consciousness on a hazy cloud of Channel Orange meets Purple Rain goodness.

This year will not only see Kyan spending time in the studio with Chic legend Nile Rogers but also see the singer-songwriter and producer release his debut album Nothing Beyond, a dreamy, crispy produced journey through his reinvigorated sound. Accompanied by a visual component, it’s set to be an ambitious first offering from the singer and today we’re premiering the latest taste in the form of his self-produced new single ‘Like Summer’. Premiering on Notion today, the video for ‘Like Summer’ sees Kyan journeying through the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City. What starts off dark and misty soon bursts in vibrant tropical colours as Kyan collects flowers from the waters of the canal. It’s a striking visual that captures the richness of the track expertly. Speaking about the video, Kyan said “‘Like Summer’ was me finally waking up from what felt like a two-year sleep, so it’s a very special song for me. It feels good to be able to tell my truth whilst also being able to show other people that even from that dark place there can always be a way out.”
