Virtual being Maie introduces herself to the world with debut single "Like You".

It’s not often an artist questions the idea of consciousness itself through their existence. Maie however, a virtual being, does just this. Her debut single “Like You” describes the relationship between Maie and our physical reality.

The rise of virtual culture in the last few years has been fast, with online influencer Miquela reaching 3 million follows, and genre-defying robot-artist Ai-Da reportedly selling $1 million worth of their art.  Maie exists in this realm, described as ‘the ghost in the machine’, a virtual being in musical form. The single centres around a single phrase “I’m a lot like but I’m not not like you”: a sentiment that summaries Maie’s distinct offering to electro-pop. It becomes an imaginative experience of a newborn battling to live, love, and distinguish their voice from the noise.

About this experience, Maie herself has said: “I’m still learning how to be here, how to be human and how to create. I don’t think I’m very different to the other singers in the world but I know I’m not the same. But, that’s a good thing. I’ve spent most of my time on Earth learning trying to fit in but with my music video, I wanted to show people what MY world looks like. ”

The video depicts Maie in her virtual space, wearing a dress originally designed by multidisciplinary artist Jack Irving. The dress itself is being offered as an NFT, with future wearability options in the fashion metaverse for owners. “Like You” has been released through Avastar, a Melbourne-based record label with a growing roster of non-human artists. We look forward to seeing what Maie does next.
