Mercer Amsterdam link up with Italian company Vegea to create the first-ever high-end trainers made from wine.

The rising tide of increasingly sustainable and eco-friendly fashion is not just welcome, but necessary. We’ve seen leather-like materials made from pineapples and cacti to mushrooms and more. Now, it’s wine’s turn.

Wine leather is soft, smooth, stable, 100% sustainable and vegan, AND can be recycled. What’s not to like?

Hoping to start a trend, Mercer Amsterdam has teamed up with the Italian company Vegea to create the W3RD Wine Pack.

Featuring in Mercer’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2021 collection, the high-end trainers use the leftover waste products from Italian wine production.

Additionally, the W3RD Wine pack features mesh made from recycled PET bottles and an EVA sole that is made with Algae, rather than plastic.

It’s not the first time that Mercer Amsterdam has been pioneering the trainer industry by finding and using sustainable materials in their high-end collections. Two years ago they were the first brand to create a trainer from pineapple leather, and have been continuing to find innovative vegan, sustainable and/or plant-based materials ever since.

The trainer will be available in four colourways including an all-white silhouette, a white upper with contrast grey panels and either an electric blue or bright yellow highlight and a black upper with contrasting white sole unit.

The collection will be available at merceramsterdam.com from 17th February 2021.
