It’s only when you round up a 100-track longlist of the best releases from 2023 that you realise just how good of a year it was for music. Earl Sweatshirt surprised us several times with a slew of stellar singles and mixtapes, Peggy Gou took her tunes to dizzying new heights with more viral hits and Tyla continued her meteoric rise with club-rocking features and solo releases. High-profile collab albums by K-Trap and Headie One and KAYTRAMINÉ, the project of Canadian producer Kaytranada and Portland rapper Aminé, also provided some memorable moments, as did debut records from PinkPantheress, Jim Legxacy and CASISDEAD. 

 

In a year where everyone danced unironically to the pop prowess of Troye Sivan, marvelled in the masterful return of Sampha and let loose to the thumping techno trap hybridity of Tirzah, here’s a playlist of our favourite tracks from 2023, compiled by the Notion team, in no particular order…
