George Moir crafts endlessly infectious, feelgood tunes, and his latest EP, ‘Guide to Growing’ is a further testament to his talents. It’s a witty, uplifting look at relationships, mental health, ambition, money troubles, anxiety and more, positioning George as the reassuring voice we’ve all needed. Through his whimsical indie-pop, George lets us know that a lot of what we go through is universal, and there’s no warmer feeling than that.

Growing up homeschooled on a farm, George told Notion that the solitude made him feel “like an alien”, but creating helped him stay sane. Making music and creating his own videos since he was a child, it’s no wonder that while George has only been releasing music professionally for the past year, his sound has a polished, mature feel.

We caught up with the slice of sunshine that is George Moir to hear more about what drives him, his dreams of hopping on a track with Beyonce, and making music that feels like baked beans. Dive in!

Tell us about your career journey – how did you get to where you are today?

I have sort of stumbled into where I’m at today, I guess [laughs]. I don’t quite know what’s happened to get me here, but I’m enjoying the ride so far. I’ve been writing and making music since I was about 13, and then went off and did a lot of video work. I thought that was a more kind of realistic job to do. I ended up signing a record deal, like a year ago with Infectious and it’s been gotten a bit mental from there [laughs]. But yeah, it’s good fun. I have no clue what I’m doing but I’m enjoying myself.

How have these times changed your music, your approach to the creative process, or as an artist as a whole?

Do you know what, the whole Covid thing hasn’t actually changed much for me at all. It’s actually helped me to stay in my comfort zone. I’ve always written and recorded in my bedroom, so there’s just been an awful lot more of that, I guess. I want to get out and play shows; I’m really excited to do that this year. Yeah, other than that, it’s kind of been me having a great time in my bedroom making videos, making music. Having a good time [laughs].

How do you write a song?

I don’t have a refined process for writing music, ideas come to me at all points throughout the day. I have little notes on my phone or I’ll do voice notes if I’m out on a walk or something. Some of the songs come really easy, and it’s just there all of a sudden, but some of you have to massage it, you might have an idea of roughly where you want it to go but you’ve got to work it into something that makes more sense. However the inspiration wants to come to me, that’s how I work with it, just going with the flow, I guess.

How would you describe your sound?

Oh, gosh, I don’t have a clue! I like to liken it to food a little bit. I want it to be like healthy, good, homemade food. Like, you eat it and you feel full, you haven’t just got a load of oil and fat and rubbish into your body, you’re getting stuff that’s good for your soul. So that’s kind of what I want it to sound like.

What dish would it be then?

At the minute, it’s baked beans, going with the latest single [titled “Baked Beans”]. A good lentil soup is always good. A good way to go, I reckon.

What do you wish more people knew about you?

I actually grew up on a farm. I was living the farm life, homeschooled, completely on another planet growing up. I feel a bit like an alien. Maybe that would be good to know [chuckles].

What’s your biggest career goal?

I would love to get on the charts. I don’t know how realistic of a goal that is, but that’s what I’m going for.

Who is an artist you’ve always admired and why?

I’ve always admired James Blake, his production style, and the way he uses the piano. I just think it’s really cool. It was what made me think, ‘ooh that’s actually quite a cool instrument, it’s not just for nerds’ [laughs]”.

How do you hope to make people feel with your music?

I’d love it to be uplifting for people and for them to feel generally positive but maybe a little bit challenged. There’s some real subject matter in there as well.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

I would love to hop on a track with Beyonce or Dan D’Lion. Two different worlds.

Lastly, what drives you?

Ooh gosh, I don’t know, I just like doing it. I don’t think I would stay sane if I didn’t create stuff. I’ve always done music and video and stuff as a hobby ever since I was like, really, really little, so I think it’s just part of my life. I think I would just completely collapse if I stopped doing it [laughs].
