The 2022 edition of the prestigious Berlin Film Festival has released a line-up featuring the likes of Emma Thompson, Mark Rylance and Juliette Binoche.

The Berlin Film Festival is typically the first big festival of the European calendar (we’re not forgetting you, Sundance), and it’s just dropped its official competition line-up. It’s still taking place in person under an abbreviated schedule from February 10th to the 16th.

The event’s Golden Bear, handed out to the winner of the Competition strand, was picked up at last year’s virtual fest by the Romanian film Bad Luck Banging, or Loony Porn. Jockeying to be the next recipient are the likes of Call Jane (directed by Carol screenwriter Phillis Nagy and starring Elizabeth Banks, Kate Mara & Sigourney Weaver), Both Sides of the Blade (a film by French cineaste Claire Denis, starring Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon) and The Novelist’s Film (directed by Hong Sang-soo, who helmed 2020 feature The Woman Who Ran).

Out of the competition line-up, debuts include Good Luck to You, Leo Grande starring Emma Thompson, and Suspiria helmer’s new horror film Dark Glasses. Gala screenings, already announced, include adventure film Against the Ice, which boasts a stacked cast including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Joe Cole, Heida Reed and Charles Dance.

The festival will run at 50% capacity. From the 17th to the 20th of February, after the competition screenings have wrapped up, four days of repeat and public screenings will take place to allow viewers to catch up on anything they’ve missed.
