Ailsa and the Seahorses returns with her latest single, ‘Awkward Social Situation’, a quirky, feel-good anthem for the introverts.

Edinburgh-born but now based in Berlin, Ailsa McEwan blends floating indie sounds with relatable lyrics, capturing the hilariously awkward realities of online dating, on ‘Awkward Social Situations’. It’s a laid-back, dreamy track that resonates with anyone who’s ever felt out of place in the world of modern romance.

Written during the autumn of 2020 in her Berlin apartment, ‘Awkward Social Situation’ evolved from a simple acoustic demo into a full-band recording at Berlin’s Famous Gold Watch Studios. Ailsa’s soft guitar riffs, paired with the easygoing vibe of her four-piece band, bring the song’s playful spirit to life. “It’s possibly the least serious song I’ve ever written,” Ailsa says. “But it’s honest. Online dating made me feel like a freak, then I realised, we’re all freaks.”

The single’s DIY energy extends to the accompanying music video, filmed in Berlin, which follows Ailsa through a series of comical karaoke performances and awkward dates. The quirky visuals echo the track’s humour and lightheartedness.

With influences from Jeff Buckley, The Smiths, and Mac DeMarco, Ailsa’s sound is a breezy blend of folk, shoegaze, and dream pop. As she gears up for the release of her debut album Hermit in 2024, ‘Awkward Social Situation’ sets the tone for what’s to come: honest, introspective songwriting wrapped in a unique, charming sound.
