North London rapper-cum-model ThaFirst reveals his musical firsts, from walking for Skepta's LFW debut to performing at an A$AP Nast party.

It’s no surprise that ThaFirst grew up around a myriad of music and fashion influences. His journey is a dynamic fusion of pulsating beats and runway elegance, rooted in the vibrant tapestry of north London, where he was born and raised. The vibrant cadence of city life has bled into all aspects of his craft. His relationship with music and fashion and the symbiosis between the two has kicked started the electric trajectory of his career. His father, a grime veteran, introduced him to the best talent the city has to offer, injecting the 24-year-old with the courage to pursue music.

ThaFirst’s latest release, ‘Chanel Bags’, could not be a more on-the-money summary of his two passions. It’s a sleek, atmospheric track permeated by intricate lyricism and potent percussion, cut with warm retro-fitted samples. The track, featuring south London rapper INFAMOUSIZAK, is a climactic anthem set to cement himself among UK rap’s elite.

With a run of releases under his belt, including the revered track ‘Bad One’, his music career is quickly taking shape, hand in hand with his explosive modelling career brought to light by walking in Skepta’s debut MAINS SS24 London Fashion Week show last year. The two worlds collided when ThaFirst performed ‘Chanel Bags’ at A$AP Nast’s Paris Fashion Week after-party. He’s a rising talent who has built a foundation in both fields.

To celebrate the release, we spoke to ThaFirst about his early music influences and who he’d recruit first in a live band.

First time you fell in love with music?

I’ve always been in love with music but I’d say the love grew dramatically when I was on the main stage with Skepta and Drake at Wireless 2015, shortly after I started creating music. The atmosphere and reception they got was something else. Their energy was something I took on and involved in my own artistry.

First song you were infatuated with?

‘Thank U Mamma’ by Sizzla. I’m not too sure exactly what it is and why but everything is so perfect in that track. From the instruments to the message and the tone to the cadence, as well as his aura on and off that song.

First gig you ever played?

I used to do little bookings around London a few years ago but my first professional gig was Frisco’s The Den at Village Underground with JME, Flowdan & Big Narstie. It was a packed crowd!

First time you worked with someone who you admired?

Skepta, when I walked for his MAINS 2023 debut show at London Fashion Week. That was a special moment, especially because it wasn’t music-related. It kick-started my modelling career.

First person you’d recruit if you had a live band?

To perform with, I’d say Jammer. His energy on stage is undefeated.

First time you felt starstruck?

First time I felt starstruck was probably performing ‘Chanel Bags’ in Paris at A$AP Nast’s fashion week after-party, that was crazy!

First thing on your rider?

For me and the team, a lot of water bottles, a couple of Biggas, some sweets and maybe a cheeky tequila.

First track you play when handed the aux?

‘Bad One’ by ThaFirst, every time!

First artist you’d add to your dream festival line up?

It would have to be Skepta, especially seeing as I’m performing at his Big Smoke Festival in July!

First purchase after a major music cheque?

Probably something cliché like a house.
